Saturday afternoon personal

E.'s new laptop
Was up late this morning and have spent hours setting up E.'s new laptop. It's all done. I just called E. to tell him. (He was getting ready for work.)

First I wanted to install the free Avira antivirus and got tricked into installing something else. Had to uninstall that and meanwhile the computer was attacked (once). Avira fixed that. Also, I installed Malwarebytes and ran that. Windows Defender also did a scan. The machine is clean. All Windows updates automatically installed. Changed the clock from Pacific to Eastern Time.

I tried to set up a Gmail account for E., but that wasn't working. (I was just getting used to the touch pad.) Ended up setting up a Yahoo! Mail account instead. (Gmail's not that great anyway.) I also installed Firefox and the Speed Dial add-on and made tabs for "Basics" (weather, email), "Research" (Wikipedia and Wiktionary), and "News" (CNN). We can add more stuff later. I also ran a backup to the hard drive. (There is a slot for a CD.)

E. just said he'd tried calling the Renter's Paradise agent, but she wasn't working today. I told him to be patient.

This computer didn't come with Microsoft Works (or Live Mail). He can always use Note Pad if he wants to write something, or he can download another program. I think he has the capability to upgrade to some additional Microsoft programs (including a word processor). Also, the 132-page User Guide is right on the desktop. Pretty cool. (No need to print it out, after all.)

Stormy day today. Lots of wind. Lucas was out on the terrace earlier, playing with one of those wasp moths from the oleander tree.

Sh*t! I just remembered I forgot to install Google Earth, but that's easy and we can do it another time.
